CoWord is capable of retaining all functionalities and the "look-and-feel" of the single-user MS Word, while providing state-of-the-art real-time multi-user editing capabilities. Anyone who is familiar with MS Word is able to use CoWord without learning. This document is an introduction of CoWord collaborative editing features, which are basically editing functions of Word, but are converted into collaborative versions by CoWord. The remaining part of this document is organized based on the menus and toolbars of Word.

1      Menus

1.1                     File

Functions supported under the File menu are shown in right figure.

*      New - Create a new document.

*      Open - Open an existing document in the local system.

*      Close - Close the current system.

*      Save - Save the document to the remote document repository. Note: this is different from the single-user Save, which saves the document to the local system.

*      Save As - Save the document with a different name in the local system.

*      Save As Web Page - Save the document as a web page in the local system.

*      Versions - Manage the version contained in this document.

*      Web Page Preview - Preview the document as a web page.

*      Print Preview - Display the print preview of the document.

*      Print - Print the document.  

*      Send To - Send the document to different receivers.

*      Properties - View the properties of the document.

*      Exit - Exit Word.

1.2                       Edit

Functions supported under the Edit menu are shown in right figure

*      Cut - Cut the selected objects into the clipboard.

*      Copy - Copy the selected objects into the clipboard.

*      Office Clipboard - Show the Clipboard pane.

*      Paste - Paste the objects in the clipboard into the document.

*      Paste Special - Paste the objects in the clipboard into the document in selected format.

*      Select All - Select the whole document.

*      Find - Find specified text in the document.

*      Replace - Replace specified text with a new text string in the document.

*      Go To - Move the caret to a specified location in the document.

*      Normal - Switch to the normal view.

*      Web Layout - Switch to the web layout view.

*      Print Layout - Switch to the print layout view.

*      Reading Layout - Switch to the reading layout view.

*      Outline - Switch to the outline view.

*      Show Paragraph Marks - Show or hide paragraph marks.

*      Gridlines - Show or hide gridlines.

*      Document Map - Show or hide the document map pane.

*      Thumbnails - Show or hide the thumbnail pane.

*      Markup - Show or hide markups.

*      Full Screen - Switch to the full-screen view mode.

*      Break - Insert a break (e.g. Page Break) into the document.

*      Date and Time - Insert the date and time into the document.

*      AutoText - Insert a predefined text string into the document.

*      Symbol - Insert a symbol (e.g. math symbol or Latin character) into the document.

*      Comment - Insert a comment into the document.

*      Number - Insert a number into the document.

*      Reference - Insert a reference into the document. The following reference types are supported:

*      Footnote

*      Picture - Insert a picture into the document. The following picture types are supported:

*      Text Box - Insert a text box (horizontal or vertical) into the document.

*      File - Insert the content of a local document into the document.

Functions supported under the Format menu are shown in right figure.

*      Font - Change different font properties (e.g. font type, font size…) of the selected text.

*      Paragraph - Change different paragraph properties of the selected paragraphs.

*      Bullets and Numbering - Change the bullets and numbering properties of the selected paragraphs.

Functions supported under the Tools menu are shown in right figure.

*      Spelling and Grammar - Check spelling and grammar errors in the document.

*      Research - Search for the selected text in reference books.

*      Word Count - Display statistic information of the document (e.g. word count, character count …).

*      Speech - Get input from human speech.

*      Track Changes - Turn on the change tracking mode.

*      Protect Document - Set protection properties of the document.

*      Online Collaboration - Start collaboration tools (e.g. NetMeeting).

2      Toolbars

2.1                     Standard Bar

*      New, Open Document, Save Document

*      Document Permission - Change the document permission properties.

*      E-Mail - Send the document in an E-mail.

*      Print, Print Preview, Spelling and Grammar, Research, Cut, Copy, Paste

*      Group Undo - Chronologically undo operations of the local user or all users (see CoWord Collaboration-Specific Features).

*      Hyperlink

*      Insert Table - Insert a table into the document.

*      Drawing - Show or hide the Drawing bar.

*      Document Map - Show or hide the document map pane.

*      Show or Hide ¶ - Show or hide paragraph marks.

*      Zoom - Change the document view zoom.

*      Help - Show or hide the help pane.

*      Read - Change to the Read view.

*      Style - Change the style of selected paragraphs.

*      Font - Change the font type of selected text.

*      Font Size - Change the font size of selected text.

*      Bold - Change the bold property of selected text.

*      Italic - Change the italic property of selected text.

*      Underline - Change the underline property of selected of paragraph.

*      Align Left - Make the selected paragraphs align to left.

*      Align Center - Make the selected paragraphs align to center.

*      Align Right - Make the selected paragraphs align to right.

*      Justified - Change the alignment property of selected paragraphs to justified.

*      Numbering - Make selected paragraphs items of a numbering list.

*      Bulleting - Make selected paragraphs items of a bulleting list.

*      Display of Review - Select to display different parts of tracked changes.

*      Show - Select to display different parts of different parts of reviewing information and display styles.

*      Previous - Go to the previous tracked change or comment.

*      Next - Go to the next tracked change or comment.

*      Accept - Accept tracked changes (the selected one or all in the document).

*      Reject - Reject tracked changes (the selected one or all in the document).

*      Insert Comment - Insert a comment into the document.

*      Track Changes - Turn on or off the change tracking mode.

*      Column To the Left - Insert a column to the left of the selected column.

*      Column To the Right - Insert a column to the right of the selected column.
